History
The Burdells' Best Awards began in 1996 with the Presidents' Council Governing Board. The awards were created to honor those campus organizations which went above and beyond the norm to imporve campus or community life. Since the inception of the awards, more than 70 campus organizations have applied. Over the first three years, the Presidents' Council awarded 22 awards in nine categories, ranging from "Outstanding Campus Impact" to "Best On-going Service Project."
In 1997, a new award was created, one which would honor the achievements of an orgainzation that truly made a difference on campus, one that was seen by the campus as a whole. This award, "Oustanding Campus Impact," was first awarded to two outstanding organizations. The Environmental Forum won in 1997 for their Earth Day activities. TEAM Buzz won in 1998 for their Community Service Day, which saw over 1100 people giving to the community in one day of service.
In 1998, another new award was initiated, one which would allow the members of Presidents' Council to honor the Oragnization of the Year. While the other awards are given based on the evalutations of a few members of the Governing Board and Advisory Board, this award is given based on votes received from student leaders across campus. The purpose of this award is to honor that organization which has done a great deal to promote communication and collaboration on campus, the central theme of the Presidents' Council, and is recognized by fellow student leaders as having done so.
